Background of the Study
Income generation among young artisans is critical to economic sustainability and poverty reduction in many regions. In Kontagora Local Government Area, Niger State, vocational training has emerged as a pivotal strategy for empowering young artisans by providing them with the necessary skills to enhance their productivity and income. Vocational training programs in this region focus on a range of skills—from traditional craftsmanship to modern production techniques—aimed at improving the quality of goods and services produced by young artisans (Yakubu, 2023). Through structured skill development, these programs not only enhance technical proficiency but also foster entrepreneurial spirit among participants, enabling them to tap into new markets and optimize their production processes (Tijani, 2024). As the local economy evolves, the integration of vocational training is increasingly seen as essential for ensuring that young artisans remain competitive in both local and broader markets. However, challenges such as inadequate training facilities, limited access to capital, and insufficient market linkages continue to impede the full potential of vocational training in driving income growth (Lawal, 2025). This study seeks to examine the impact of vocational training on income generation among young artisans in Kontagora by evaluating current training practices, identifying the obstacles to effective income enhancement, and proposing strategies to overcome these barriers. The research will assess how vocational training contributes to skill refinement, product quality improvement, and ultimately, better income outcomes for artisans. By engaging with artisans, training providers, and market experts, the study aims to develop a holistic understanding of the dynamics between vocational training and income generation. The findings are expected to inform policy and programmatic interventions that support the economic empowerment of young artisans, contributing to regional development and poverty alleviation (Yakubu, 2023; Tijani, 2024; Lawal, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Young artisans in Kontagora face significant challenges in generating sustainable income due to the gap between their traditional skill sets and the demands of modern markets. Despite the introduction of vocational training programs, many artisans continue to struggle with low productivity and limited access to quality training that could enhance their technical skills and marketability (Yakubu, 2023). The current training programs are often hampered by inadequate resources, outdated equipment, and a lack of practical, market-oriented content. Consequently, the skills imparted do not fully translate into improved income generation. Moreover, limited market access and poor business development support further constrain artisans' ability to capitalize on their newly acquired skills (Tijani, 2024). The absence of a robust framework for monitoring and evaluating the impact of vocational training on income generation exacerbates the problem, leaving policymakers with insufficient data to drive meaningful reforms. This study aims to address these challenges by investigating the relationship between vocational training and income generation among young artisans in Kontagora. It will explore the key factors that limit the economic benefits of vocational training and examine potential strategies to enhance the effectiveness of these programs in boosting artisan incomes. By doing so, the research intends to provide actionable recommendations that could lead to more effective vocational training models, increased entrepreneurial opportunities, and ultimately, improved income levels among young artisans (Lawal, 2025; Yakubu, 2023; Tijani, 2024).
